I am usually the listener in the bunch no matter who I hang out with; I don’t know why, but everyone thinks I’m a great listener. I guess it has to do with the fact I don’t judge anyone and I rarely offer advice unless asked for it. Every now and then it’s great to know I have someone whom I can confide in and to; today I had just that!
My co-worker (whom I think I’ve introduced here before, but if not I’ll refer to him as “Daniel”) that I was working with today is an awesome listener! Daniel doesn’t judge or hold grudges, etc. He is perfect for rambling on to about anything and everything. In his own words he claims to “not be one to pass judgement…I’ve done worse!”
Today, the first Monday after all the holidays (Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s to be exact), was slow as heck — I don’t mind slow usually. Anyway, so I had a lot on my mind to talk about and, until I got to work, no one to talk to about it! Poor Daniel got an earful, but he reminded me he doesn’t mind listening to me or anyone for that matter. I smiled and told him thanks and how much I appreciated it.
I know God always listens, too. Often times we forget that, though, and want someone to talk to here — that is a physical being. I forget that often myself, but here’s the thing (and I’m reminding myself of this, too) even though we don’t think God’s listening (because maybe God doesn’t grant us our prayers in the way we want, etc.) God is! God sends us messages through others, through signs, and through actions of others. We have to remember God doesn’t speak always in a loud, booming voice. Sometimes God speaks to us in whispers. God doesn’t always speak in words either.
Today, in fact, I found myself chanting “Now what do I do?” and pivoted on my foot to see a customer staring back at me and smiling. I smiled in return and proceeded to wait on them. I said to myself, “Well, that’s something. Thanks, God!”
So the next time you feel you need someone to talk to, but no one seems to be around — remember: God is listening and will answer in some way, even if it isn’t the way we traditionally think of for answers.
God, bless us everyone!
