Why is Lang Sine Old?

On this New Year’s Eve, I couldn’t resist doing a bit of research and kind of parodying the popular song sang on New Year’s Eve (Auld Lang Syne). So without further ado here is my two bits on the popular song.

So let’s begin with just how old is Lang Sine (Auld Lang Syne)? Well, my research has found that the song was originally a poem and that poem originated in 1711. It was sent from a man named Robert Burns in 1788 to The Scots Musical Museum. Mr. Burns, however, it seems to me that it is not certain if he really wrote the song as he wrote with the poem “The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man.”

Apparently someone a very long time ago felt the need to share his feelings with someone and it continues to this very day. My guess then is Lang Sine (Lang Syne) is old because he was born so long ago and probably as old as “The Old World” herself.

Now here are the English minimalist’s lyrics:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS
Happy New Year and God bless us, everyone!
