There was a bracelet that was popular back when I was in high school, I still have it, but I don’t wear it as much any more. I’ll even bet some of you remember it. The bracelet was the biggest fad ever and for a time being Christian was the hip thing! This bracelet was embroidered with “W.W.J.D.” and stood for “What would Jesus do?”. This bracelet was so hip, cool, and seemed to actually take the world to a whole new place. It made morality seem cool finally. So what Jesus would do seemed to be the biggest rage. It also came at a time when the world-wide web was just coming about, too; which might explain why I felt it was a web address, and eventually it came to pass that a website was founded. I believe it still exists at http://www.wwjd.com. I actually downloaded a screen saver from them, too. There is (or at least was) a CD that came with the famous bracelet by the same name, W.W.J.D. I own this, too.
What would Jesus think of all this marketing and such? I have to think He would be fairly upset, much like He was in the Temple area in Jerusalem when He overturned the tables and scattered away all the merchants and their merchandise (see Matthew 21:12-17). So what am I proposing? I guess I’m sort of mixed on this to be honest. I’m saddened by the lack of morality in today’s world and want the bracelets to make a comeback; at the same time I am like Jesus and don’t like people making profit off of God and at God’s expense.
As I’ve stated before, the popular bracelet is a nifty way to bring back morality to society at large; at the same token, it is also a way to put a price tag on God. 😕
